“Why do I Want to be an Instructor”

When I sit back and let my mind wander I often find myself floating weightlessly in a bright blue sea, watching a Caribbean Reef Shark glide inches in front of me. I see a small octopus hanging out of an old conch shell that it had made its home. I see a Trunk Fish peeking out of the port hole of a tug boat sunk eighty-eighty feet down. I see myself Scuba Diving.

Then I remember the first time I saw my Instructor hovering effortlessly upside down so he could peek under a ledge at two giant lobsters, and wanting immediately to master by buoyancy like that. I remember the time I was being guided around a pinnacle by an Instructor with a slate pointing out many of the more unique fish, and writing their names on the board for us. He had challenged us during his dive brief to try and stump him by pointing out any fish we thought he might not now; and win a beer later that night. That’s when I realized I wanted to know the sea too.

Then I begin to think how amazing it would be to create a life where building those memories is just another day on the job; a life where I could be inspiring others to want to master their buoyancy or help them discover the diversity of the sea. I begin to think how amazing it would be, to be a Scuba Instructor and teach others to dive. Then they too could peel back that surface, and open for themselves a world of wonder, and adventure, and a bright blue sea.
